At Bournemouth University, the MaGPIE team is supported by an industry-led steering group that plays a crucial role in ensuring its research is both relevant and of the highest quality. These experts collaborate with the team to keep the research aligned with its core objectives, ensuring that the project’s goals are clearly defined, met, and maintained throughout its 5-year programme.
The steering group serves as a governance body, upholding the integrity of the research by ensuring it adheres to the highest standards. This includes strict compliance with ethical guidelines, legal requirements, and best practices in the field. Their oversight ensures that the research is not only well-managed and ethically conducted but also remains true to its intended purpose.
We are proud to introduce the members of MaGPIE’s steering group, each of whom brings a wealth of expertise in human rights and international law:
Dr Morris Tidball-Binz currently serves as the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary executions. In his most recent report to the Human Rights Council report on the Protection of the Dead, he advocates for universally recognised human-rights-based principles to ensure the dead are consistently protected under international law.
Alexa Koenig is the Executive Director of the Human Rights Center at UC Berkeley and was instrumental in the development of the Berkeley Protocol on Digital Open Source Investigations. Her work intersects with MaGPIE’s mission, particularly in areas such as climate displacement and migration, open-source data, and DNA forensic family reunification.
Professor Roger Brownsword is at the forefront of law, ethics and technology, especially the regulation of AI, areas rapidly evolving and deeply relevant to MaGPIE’s research. His expertise ensures that the project stays up-to date with questions of governance both internal to, and externally impacting the project.
Sharon Nakandha is a human rights practitioner with over 12 years of experience leading and supporting national, regional and global interventions to advance the rule of law. Currently serving as the Accountability and Justice Programme Manager for the Open Society Foundations, she offers invaluable expertise at the intersection of law, policy, and human rights.
MaGPIE is delighted and grateful to have their guidance on quality, integrity, and relevance to the global human rights landscape.
